Dream room gets
an elegant finish

Makeover contest leads to home transformation

The second South Coast Beacon Dream Room Makeover is finished and the Perlin family has a new living room to show for it. The family also has a renovated dining room, kitchen and breakfast nook, having used the Dream Room Makeover as the starting point for a major re-do.

“Susan and I redesigned the area of the space, which included opening walls, dropping the living room ceiling, creating an entryway and adding archways and spaces in the kitchen,” said Bunny DeLorie, who, with business partner Susan Lomeli, oversaw the makeover. She and Lomeli own Homes Dressed to Sell, a company that helps sellers make their homes more enticing to potential buyers by staging the interior with key furnishings and accessories.

With assistance from contest sponsors, DeLorie and Lomeli gave the living room and attached dining room a new look from floor to ceiling and front door to back.

Bella View Windows installed new windows and doors while Luis Cruz from K&K Painting Co. brought color to the walls courtesy of Goleta Valley Paint. Cruz also refinished the cupboards and cabinets in the kitchen with a creamy antique glaze. The five-step process involved sanding the original surface and applying two coats of paint, a coat of antique glaze and a finishing coat of lacquer.

“Luis did a beautiful job,” said DeLorie. “He painted the walls and ceilings in the whole house.”

Andros Floor Design provided wood flooring, which the Perlins assigned to the dining and living rooms, kitchen and breakfast nook.

Finishing touches came from Brazil Baroque in the form of an accent table for the dining room and from Tri-County Lighting, which offered wall sconces and a matching chandelier for the dining room.

Makeover fans kept track of the process through a Web site designed by John Ovrebo. He maintained a photo library and a virtual walking tour of the house so site visitors could watch the progress.

Ovrebo’s company, House-Maps.com, provides detailed as-built floor plans and area calculations for residential and commercial properties. His clients include real estate agents who want to provide potential home buyers with as detailed information as possible on the footprints and room dimensions of properties they represent and home owners who want to document the contents layout of their homes for insurance and other purposes.

“It was great working with all the local businesses,” DeLorie said.
